Many people have a romantic idea of the life of a cowboy. Long rides, campfire evenings with the guitar, cuddling with horses, drinking whiskey and playing poker in some old smoky saloon and sometimes using the Colt.
As so often, this cliché corresponds to the facts in absolutely no way. It's a hard and honest work, 365 days a year, around the clock, 24 hours, 7 days a week. The job leaves scars on the body through injuries, weather, falls, accidents, the loss of animals and many other influences - but also on the soul. Stillborn foals, lambs and calves are not uncommon on the ranch and have to be dealt with. Pictures of injured, torn or euthanized animals burn themselves deep in the soul.
At the end of the day, the cowboy is an endangered species; hard-working men with solid values, showing that beeing well raised from their parents was their gift from their parents, characterized by prudence, fairness, honesty and compassion, guided each day by a firm belief in their family and God.
Real cowboys are committed to the so-called Cowboy Code and the Code of the West.. Therefore, one should think twice, if one speaks of the sometimes very highly negative afflicted cowboy style, describing rude behaviour.
The idea for the lyrics came to Mel Georg during the work with the lawnmower tractor in the summer of 2017. After a long day in the dust, the text was almost complete. During their stay in Nashville in September 2018, Mel and Kristin revisited the song and lovingly reworked it so Rob could sing it in a few weeks later.
lyrics
The cowboys in the movies
Don't tell you the whole story
I'm living proof
We're not it in for the glory
Same thing every morning
Cup of coffee and a smoke
Then it's work and mud and pain and blood
And fixin' what is broke
Chorus
This life is hard
I'm not gonna lie
But cowgirls/cowboys don't cry
This life is hard
Just tryin' to stay alive
But cowgirls/cowboys don't cry
We just get dust in our eyes
Every new day in the saddle
Brings a new chance to get trampled
It's not if, it's when you'll break your ass
Yeah every day's a gamble
Chorus
Bridge
These scars tell the stories of my life
And I thank God for them every night
Oh these scars they tell the stories of my life
And I thank God for them every night
This life is hard
I'm not gonna lie
But cowgirls/cowboys don't cry
This life is hard
Just tryin' to stay alive
But cowgirls/cowboys don't cry
No cowboys don't cry
Cowboys don't cry
We just get dust in our eyes
These scars tell the stories of my life
And I thank God for them every night
